Before its official launch in Malaysia, Hyundai Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) teased that the Hyundai Ioniq 6 could potentially cover the distance from Taiping to Johor Bahru on just one charge. Equipped with a 77.4kWh battery, the Ioniq 6 Max RWD variant boasts an impressive WLTP-rated range of 614km, setting high expectations for its real-world performance.
To put these claims to the test, we embarked on an extensive road trip with the Hyundai Ioniq 6, aiming to verify its capability as a true long-distance cruiser. Our journey began from Kuala Lumpur, where we first charged at Ipoh X Park before heading to Taiping, Perak, the starting point of our 600km challenge.
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 Max RWD, priced at RM289,888, features a single electric motor producing 168kW (228hp) and 350Nm of torque. With a sleek design and enhanced aerodynamics (0.21 Cd drag coefficient), coupled with 18″ Aero wheels, the Ioniq 6 is optimized for efficiency at highway speeds.
Setting off from Taiping around 3pm with the battery at 83%, we stopped for a quick top-up at Caltex Bukit Gantang (Southbound) to ensure a full charge before commencing the journey. Charging from 81% to 100% on a 50kW DC Charger took us just 26 minutes, allowing us to continue confidently towards Johor Bahru.
Throughout the trip, we maintained a conservative driving approach with adaptive cruise control set at 110km/h, ECO mode engaged, and the air-conditioning at a steady 23°C. Despite encountering various traffic conditions and weather changes, including rain and congestion, the Ioniq 6 demonstrated exceptional efficiency.
By strategically managing stops for dinner and breaks at R&R stations, we maximized our range efficiency. Notably, even with mixed traffic and speed variations, the Ioniq 6 consistently achieved impressive energy consumption rates, hovering around 11.7-13.1 kWh per 100km.
Approaching Johor Bahru with battery levels gradually decreasing, we strategically adjusted driving speeds and modes to maintain efficiency. Despite receiving battery warnings, including at 20% and 10% capacity, the Ioniq 6 continued to perform reliably, reaching its destination with 5% battery remaining and covering a total distance of 575.1km on a single charge.
Our journey confirmed that the Hyundai Ioniq 6 RWD not only meets but exceeds its claimed range capabilities, demonstrating its suitability for long-distance travel without compromising comfort or performance. Stay tuned for our comprehensive review and additional insights into driving the Hyundai Ioniq 6 RWD over extended distances.
